GENERAL ORIENTATION

A devastating earthquake hit Sichuan province in China on 12th May 2008, followed by a
series of aftershocks, landslides, and storms. Along with natural disasters, the world is
being challenged with multi-dimensional threats, from pandemic disease, food shortage,
industrial accidents, to worldwide financial crisis. All of these threats are subjected to
substantial variation and uncertainty, which calls for a pivotal role by the science of risk
assessment and management. In addition to the collaboration among nation-wide
stakeholders, regional and international communication and corporation are particularly
beneficial for integrated risk governance.
